Setting the Table | No. 5 Fajita Night

It is a Tuesday and we are having fajitas. The table is set. The Constance placemats are down, the Abigail napkins folded alongside them, the Serena and Lily footed bowl full of tortilla chips sitting in the center of the table like it was always supposed to be there. The rattan wrapped candles are lit. The palomitas are poured before anyone sits down.

Fajita night is one of my favorite tables in this series because it makes the point better than almost any other: a beautiful table does not care what night of the week it is. Tuesday gets the good napkins. Tuesday always has.

This is week five of Setting the Table, a year of fifty-two tables built from the same capsule collection styled for every occasion. Here is everything on the fajita night table.

The Table

The Constance placemats go down first in chocolate brown, which is a warmer and more grounding base for a fajita night table than a white tablecloth. The Abigail Floral napkins alongside them bring the color and the pattern that a Tuesday fajita night deserves. The combination is unexpected and completely right.

The Serena and Lily footed bowl sits in the center of the table filled with tortilla chips. This is one of my favorite styling moments in the whole series — a beautiful piece doing its most useful job. No separate chip bowl needed. The footed bowl is the centerpiece and the snack all at once.

The entree bowls are out for the toppings, all the small ones lined up family style so everyone can build their own plate. The brown bistro flatware alongside. The stemless cocktail glasses for the palomitas, which are on the table before anyone sits down because that is the fajita night rule.

Rattan wrapped candles instead of taper candles for this table. The texture is warmer and more casual and it fits the fajita night energy perfectly. Light them before anyone sits down.

The Menu

• Chips and guacamole for pre-dinner snacking

• Sheet pan fajitas with all the toppings served family style - this is adapted from Serena Wolf’s fajita bowl recipe shared over on my Substack.

• Cilantro rice and black beans alongside

• Rosemary Palomitas to drink

• Ice cream sandwiches for dessert - store bought is perfect

The Outfit

Fajita night calls for something colorful and easy. The kind of outfit that says Tuesday but means it as a compliment.

First option: the Alice Walk lavender skirt and tank. Add a colorful Bauble Bar necklace and off white Rothy’s.

Second option: the Tuckernuck gingham tie strap dress. Easy, colorful, completely right for a fajita night table. Same Bauble Bar necklace and off white Rothy’s.

The Trudie Capsule

The Constance placemats and Abigail napkins are both part of the Trudie spring tabletop capsule. The Abigail napkins and placemats are quickly selling out and this will be the last run of this print so if you have been thinking about it, now is the time.
